This year, Gerhard Merz created five large-size paintings in his studio in Italy, which under the name “Königswurf” fully take over the gallery rooms at Schellingstraße.
The first polychrome piece consists of several layers of pigment. The other four paintings are made from varnish, an artificial, art-hostile substance, applied several inches-thick, spread on the canvas with one single throw, they are Anti-Paintings devoid of classical qualities.
