Sean Scully, RED CHAMBER || DARK SILENCE | Munich 26.02.2026 - 02.05.2026

Sean Scully, born in Dublin in 1945, developed one of the central positions in geometric abstraction in New York in the 1970s. His compositions, constructed from stripes, bars, and squares, combine formal rigor with high emotional intensity, which is evident in the dynamic brushwork of the richly applied paint and the exposed, frayed edges of color.

Scully’s painting lends a physical and existential dimension to geometric form. Color and structure become carriers of rhythm, tension, and memory, opening up the seemingly static order to a sensual experience of space.

Starting on February 26, the Walter Storms Gallery will present Sean Scully’s third solo exhibition at the gallery since he opened the gallery’s new location on Schellingstraße in 2009. His work has been shown in numerous international retrospectives, including at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, the National Gallery, London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and many more. Sean Scully lives in the Hudson Valley, New York, and has studios in London, Berlin, and Moosurach near Munich.
