With the solo exhibition sieben jahre (seven years), the Walter Storms Gallery presents an overview of the works created by Viola Bittl (born 1980) during her creative years. The exhibition marks a moment of retrospection that can be interpreted both as an end point and a new beginning
The title functions not only as a temporal bracket. It refers to the cultural symbolism of the number seven—a measure of time that is mythologically, biblically, and philosophically associated with change, renewal, and transformation. sieben jahre understands time not as a linear narrative, but as an energetic condensation: as a phase of pause and consistent restart. In Bittl’s painting, time is not depicted, but inscribes itself as a trace in the layering of color.
Through dynamic gestures and multi-layered overlays, Bittl transforms color into space. Forms are serially varied, shifted, and rebalanced, creating a pull that draws the viewer into the depths of the pictorial spaces and makes perception tangible as an ongoing process.
seven years is Viola Bittl’s first solo exhibition in Berlin.
